Sage (Salvia Officinalis) has two main uses. It has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties (due to the presence of diterpenes) which, along with it's astringent and mucous busting properties (due to the presence of thujone), make it an ideal gargle for mouth and throat infections such as tonsilitis. Sage also contains estrogen-like substances which, with it's ability to stem perspiration, make it a perfect herb for treating menopause.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is best known as the rich yellow spice used in curries but it's culinary use doesn't come close to showcasing the properties of this multi-talented herb. In medical terms it is referred to as a Non Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug (NSAID) which basically means it is a potent anti-inflammatory agent but without the nasty side-effects of the pharmaceutical anti-inflammatories. As such, it it is indicated for inflammatory conditions of the joints such as rheumatoid and...

As we are in between clinics here at Vital Spirit Natural Health I am currently doing home visits for my consultations. The same standard of care is available as when you would visit a clinic but I do need somewhere private to conduct the consultation and simply deliver your herbs and/or supplements later that day.

Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is an excellent herb for conditions of the lung. Because of its mucolytic properties (ie ability to break down mucous) it is ideal for conditions such as bronchitis and asthma. It is considered a relaxing expectorant so whilst it creates a productive cough it also has the ability to reduce bronchial spasm. Additionally, Thyme is anti-microbial so whilst reducing the severity of the symptoms of respiratory infections it concurrently kills the micro-organism causing the...

Valerian contains a volatile oil component (valerianic acid) which gives it the distinctive odour, volatile alkaloids (eg valerianine) and valepotriates, which are compounds called iridoids and are responsible for the sleep inducing property of the herb.

Hypericum perforatum, commonly known as St John’s Wort is traditionally, empirically and scientifically used to address depression in the individual, a condition caused by a disturbance of brain neurotransmitters (eg serotonin) responsible for mood. St John’s Wort has the ability to normalise this disturbance with similar efficacy than the commonly prescribed conventional antidepressants and with fewer side effects. The herb does demonstrate other activities such as antiviral (Pengelly,...
