The pH is a scale of 1-14 used in chemistry to measure how acidic or alkaline something is. It is logarithmic which simply means that with each number on the scale the intensity multiplies by 10. For example something with a pH of 3 is ten times more acidic than something with a pH of 4. But what does all this have to do with you? Different parts of the body have a pH at which they function at optimal levels. For example stomach acid has a pH of 1.2-3.0 which is very acidic owing to the...

Someone asked me to comment on theories around the rise of childhood allergies. The immune system is extremely complex consisting of an array of different types of white blood cells such as natural killer cells, neutrophils, macrophages, B lymphocytes and T lymphocytes. The T lymphocytes can be further classified into T helper 1 cells and T helper 2 cells and it is in this category that the immune system has the potential to become a double edged sword as both types of T helper cells should...

What oil are you cooking with at home? The most common answer I hear is olive oil but is olive oil all it's cracked up to be and is it the best oil to cook with. The answer is yes and no. The suitability of oils for frying has much to do with the way we nutritionists classify fats and oils; as saturated, monounsaturated or polyunsaturated. Given that most people haven't studied organic chemistry I won't bore you with explaining the difference except to say that each type of fat is more or less...

It seems every second person these days is going gluten free in the hope that it alleviates various digestive upsets such as bloating, wind, reflux and even irritable bowel syndrome. Gluten intolerance is certainly on the rise and it is generally accepted that this is due to the way foods that contain the tough, elastic protein such as wheat, rye, oats and triticale are processed. For example bread was traditionally left to proof for a longer time and the process of fermentation would cause...
Dandelion (Taraxacum officianale) is arguably owed the title for the most traditional detox herb and is certainly one of the most accessible growing prolifically as a weed in many a backyard.
The leaves of the dandelion are highly nutritious and can be added to salads, made into a tea or a juice. It is an effective diuretic for conditions characterised by fluid retention and a tonic for the liver and gallbladder.

I primarily use the Metagenics Integrated Detox Program at Vital Spirit because it addresses significant sources of internal toxin exposure rather than just targeting the detox organs themselves. It always alarms me when people complain or even joke about this issue of healthy eating being tasteless and boring. It need not be any of these things. Some of our best natural flavour enhancers such as chilli and cocoa (in its pure form) are actually fat burning and there's a multitude of other herbs and spices that can be used to flavour food which do not contribute to caloric intake. Some of these herbs and spices also have added medicinal benefits. Turmeric is highly...

Stress can be difficult to deal with at the best of times but did you know it could actually be contributing to your weight? When stress becomes a significant part of everyday life, levels of the adrenal hormone cortisol rises which can impact on weight in a number of ways. This special kind of fat called visceral adipose tissue (VAT) contains a number of substances which signal the body to do certain things. Examples of these...
Mistletoe (Viscum album) is actually a parasitic shrub which thrives on trees such as spruces and pines. It is traditionally used as a hypotensive (blood pressure lowering) herb, it's effects being attributable to choline derivatives which act on the parasympathetic portion of the autonomic nervous sytstem thereby dilating the blood vessels. The lignans in the plant render it useful for angina and tachycardia due to the tonifying action to the heart muscle.

Fenugreek (Trigonella foecum-graecum) has quite a diverse range of indications. It is an effective agent for lowering blood lipids, cholesterol and sugars due primarily to the presence of an alkaloid derivative of Nicotinic acid (vitamin B3) called Trigonelline. The seeds are always used and these are also rich in steroidal saponins which account for it action as a galactagogue. Peppermint's (Mentha piperita) most significant action is that of a carminative (that which has a calming action) on the gastrointestinal tract. This is most likely due to the presence of Menthol in the volatile oil portion harvested from the leaves and flowering tops of the plant. My symptoms were puzzling for doctors and I underwent a number of tests looking for lymphoma, liver disease, diabetes, coeliacs…the list went on…and all without answers! Liz has treated and...

Do you suffer from cold and flu every year? Perhaps you even get the flu shot and still find yourself with those same old symptoms, nose that runs like a tap, stuffy head and achiness. Many people also suffer from secondary chest infections which make life even more miserable and take longer for them to get back to day to day activities. The common trap people fall into is not looking after their immune system, waiting until they fall ill and then medicating themselves with harsh...
"Dear Liz,

I would like to thank you for the genuine concern you have shown for my health and well being. Prior to meeting with you I was feeling very stressed and finding it difficult to cope with day to day activities without feeling stressed and anxious. I never knew stress and anxiety could have such a negative affect not only on me but on my entire life and those around me. I avoided social functions because I just couldn’t cope with people. Upon starting the herbal medicine I began...
The same standard of care is available as when you would visit a clinic but I do need somewhere private to conduct the consultation and simply deliver your herbs and/or supplements later that day.
